OPERATION OF THE KIRBY
The Kirby Company provides a detailed Use & Care Manual and Video with each unit. Please review these before operating your Kirby Home Care System. These materials are meant to supplement and not replace the Use & Care Manual and Video

How do I know when the vacuum is at the proper height for cleaning?

Adjusting your machine to the proper height ensures that the Kirby will remove as much debris from your carpet as possible. Setting it at the proper height maximizes airflow and allows the brush roll to gently, yet effectively agitate your carpeting. Raise the Power nozzle to the highest setting and turn the Kirby on. Then lower the foot pedal one level at a time until you hear a change in the sound of the motor. Lower the Power Nozzle one more level and your Kirby is now at the proper height for your carpeting.

What attachment do I use on stairs?

Kirby offers two ways to clean stairs. First, you can use it in the portable mode. Remember, if cleaning hardwood floors set the Kirby in the "neutral" position and use the hardwood floor pad. Second, use it in the canister mode with the upholstery nozzle or Zippbrush.

How do I change the belt?

Remove the nozzle from the Kirby. Release the belt tension by using the L-shaped handle on the belt lifter to turn it all the way to the right (clockwise) until the red arrows line up. Unlock the rug plate by unhooking the two latches on the rear of the nozzle and remove it from the nozzle. Noted the brush roll setting, which is indicated by a number or a series of notches. (See the next question for more information on the brush roll setting.) Lift out the belt and brush roll. Slide off the old belt and replace with a new one. Replace the brushroll making sure each end is on the same setting. Replace the rug plate and turn the belt lifter to the left (counter-clockwise) until the green arrows line up.

How do I know when it's time to replace the brush roll?

The brush roll has three settings (indicated by notches or numbers) on each side. You can adjust the height of the brush roll as it wears. The greater the number of notches, the farther the bristles are extended. To change the settings, follow instructions as replacing a belt, but when installing the brush roll, adjust the settings as desired. Always make sure they are on the same setting for both sides of the brush roll. When the bristles are at the greatest extension, you should consider replacing your brush roll to ensure maximum performance.

Whom should I contact for questions on how to operate the Kirby?

Call your nearest authorized Kirby distributor. If you do not have his or her number, call 1-800-437-7170 for the authorized distributor nearest you.

How often do I change the disposable bag?

Change the disposable bag BEFORE the debris inside the bag reaches the "FULL" line designated on the outside of the bag. Overfilling the disposable bag will impair the ability of the Kirby to remove and filter dirt.

Is any power lost when using the attachments?

When using the attachments, the motor operates in "high" speed and has even greater suction.

How do I remove spots from my carpet?

Consider the type of spot or stain in your carpet before attempting to remove them. It is important to remember that the sooner you remove the spot, the better the possibility that it will come out. However, most spots are removable if the proper cleaning method is used in a timely manner. Stains involving acidic properties such as juices, vomit or urine are the most difficult to remove. Any spot or stain can also affect the backing of your carpeting, and when attempting to remove these stains, wicking (spreading of the stain or the stain reappearing) can occur. Depending on the type of stain repeated cleaning might remove the stain. Check our handy Stain Removal Chart for the best ways to remove a stain. Kirby has available an Emergency Carpet Care Kit and a full line of products specially designed to remove stains. They are available at your local, authorized Kirby distributorship or contact The Jackson Group on 02 98911322

Where can I purchase a Kirby?

Kirbys are only available through in-home demonstrations by an authorized distributorship. For a listing of distributorships in your area check your yellow pages or call 02 98911322

Why are Kirbys only sold door-to-door?

The Kirby cleaning system is unique in that it has many functions. In order for you to understand these functions and see how it tackles your cleaning needs, the distributor demonstrates the Kirby in your home. This allows you to determine whether or not the Kirby Home Care System is right for your cleaning needs. It also offers you first hand experience with its operation before buying. We believe that giving you a chance to see how the machine will perform in your home is important because you are selecting a machine to provide you and your family with a clean living environment.

Why can't I purchase a fan, switch or electrical parts to replace it myself?

Kirby units are intricate machines. A number of parts are on a "proprietary list" for safety reasons and are not sold to consumers directly. Should you need one of these parts, please contact an authorized Kirby distributorship for assistance. Also note any unauthorized replacement of parts voids your warranty.
